Our Mission

Our mission is to create or extend biodiversity refugia and empower resilient local networks so that they can protect and steer these refugia through the era of planetary crisis we have now entered. We do this via non-commercial citizen science expeditions, which are organised as a joint covenant between equal, committed peers rather than a consumer travel product. By the same token, we do not engage in infantilising “save the planet” feelgood stories and provide space for ecological grief and truth-telling about the state of our world.

The Four Primary Pillars of Our Work

• Conservation Triage & Refugia: We concentrate time, capital and field research where targeted interventions can protect, establish and expand viable biodiversity refugia and empower local guardians.
• Radical Honesty & Ecological Grief: We provide a dedicated space for witness bearing, radical honesty and ecological grief, replacing performative hopewashing with grounded, meaningful action.
• Non-Commercial Focus: We are against commercialisation and for independent, non-proft scientifc enquiry and conservation work, decoupled from market imperatives and consumer travel dynamics wherever possible.
• Local Empowerment: We build local capacity, de-colonise our conservation work and hand over research tools directly to in-country stewards, ensuring field projects yield long-term autonomy rather than fragile dependencies.

Our Ten Core Commitments

Biosphere Expeditions stands alone in the conservation and volunteering spheres through these ten core committments:

• Non-Commercial Covenant: We operate strictly as a non-commercial entity, organising our expeditions as a joint covenant between consenting adults rather than a consumer travel product. As such we are independent of market imperatives and volume growth, which we reject.
• Ethical Social Policy & Local Capacity-Building: We reject the transactional dynamics of voluntourism. Instead we co-design every expedition alongside in-country partners, granting complete data co-ownership and providing fully funded placements for local stewards to build permanent research capacity within host communities.
• Honest Communications with Zero Hopewashing: We will not engage in "save the planet" public relations spin across our communications and scientific reporting. We reject infantilising narratives that reduce environmental collapse to comforting fairy tales, treating our participants and supporters as mature beings fully capable of confronting unvarnished biophysical reality. Instead we provide a dedicated space for witness bearing, radical honesty and ecological grief.
• One-Expedition-One-Report Principle: We offer uncompromising transparency through the publication of a dedicated scientific report for every single expedition completed, including transparent expedition budgets and conservation conclusions and recommendations.
• Rejection of Corporate Money and Sponsorship: We will not accept corporate financial contributions, preventing reputation laundering and greenwashing while safeguarding our uncompromised scientific independence. We will accept match-funding from participant employers as long as they have zero strings attached.
• Vegetarian Expedition Policy: We serve a plant-based diet across all field operations to align the way we act in the field with our ecological mission.
• Pragmatic Equipment Policy: We reject consumerist replacement cycles and superficial hardware upgrades. Instead we utilise durable, repairable field gear and pre-finance reliable technology for permanent transfer to in-country partners. We operate with resource pragmaticism, utilising equipment, technology and supplies for as long as they remain functional, safe and effective, even if this is beyond artificial thresholds and sell-by dates, which are by and large designed to drive consumption and waste.
• Honest Emissions & Anti-Offset Policy: We explicitly reject greenwashed carbon offset schemes as modern indulgences, confronting the reality of aviation footprints without fake reassurance while preparing projects for post-aviation transport contraction.
• Safe Space for Ecological Grief: We provide a transparent, non-judgmental space where ecological sorrow is acknowledged rather than suppressed, ensuring grief is no longer paralysing but transformed through radical honesty into positive action and targeted stewardship.
• Contraction-Ready Exit Strategy: We have a defined operational exit strategy that prepares field projects to transition to fully independent, local management as international air travel and citizen science projects contract.

Not gloom, but meaning and integrity

Climate upheaval is now locked in, bringing planetary crisis, biodiversity loss and civilisational convulsions in its wake. Biosphere Expeditions accepts this reality without illusion. Far from an exercise in gloom, embracing planetary realities provides profound meaning and integrity to our work. It offers executive leaders, professional and citizen scientists and local partners the certainty that their effort is not a symbolic gesture in a losing battle, but a targeted intervention giving functional ecosystems a fighting chance through the global transition period we have entered.
